Chimneys.-In a shaft furnace or kiln for burning or calcining limestone and the like an adjustable chimney 49 is provided for getting rid of the carbonic acid or other heavy incombustible gas during the process of calcination. The bottom of the chimney is preferably bell-mouthed to assist the passage of the gases. If it is desired to collect the carbonic acid, branch pipes 52 conduct the gas from the chimney to the chambers 53.
