Abstract

1297840 Marking apparatus AMERICAN CYANAMID CO 30 Dec 1970 [5 March 1970] 61888/70 Heading B2F In the marking of articles 12 moved on a conveyor 16 past a marking station 14, the articles are marked by liquid pulse producing guns 18, producing discrete slugs of marking liquid, the liquid being supplied to the guns under low pressure from a reservoir 22 and the pulses regulated by a controller 42 which controls the times of opening of needle valves in the guns 18, an arm 34 operating a switch 30 which in turn is connected to a counter 40 informing the controller 42 of the presence of an article at the marking station. As shown each gun 18 has a needle valve 78 with a seat 70 and an orifice 74, the rear end of this needle valve being connected to a magnetic core 80 located within a solenoid coil 56, a spring 82 biasing the valve towards the closed position and the valve being opened when the solenoid receives an electrical pulse from the controller 42. The opening of the valve for a predetermined time allows the passage through the orifice of a slug of marking liquid, the stroke of the needle valve (which is variable in one embodiment), the dimensions of the orifice and the pressure of the liquid all being chosen such as to produce unatomized, cohesive pulses of liquid for the obtaining of substantially circular marks 44 on the articles. The liquid may be a photoluminescent ink, and the markings may represent serial numbers.
