Abstract

1,219,402. Selective embossing. GABRIEL MFG. CO. Ltd. 6 March, 1968 [16 Dec., 1966], No. 56389/66. Heading B6F. Apparatus for embossing selected characters in metal objects comprises a frame 1 carrying a reciprocable hammer head 5 and a turnable head 6, the head 6 permanently or detachably carrying angularly spaced dies 17 each provided with an embossing character die, and actuating means operative to force the hammer head into striking engagement with the selected die 17. Hammer impression; pneumatic impression mechanism.-The hammer head 5 is carried by a piston-rod 13 which is attached to a piston 12 reciprocable within a cylinder 11 attached to the frame 1. Downward motion of the piston 12 may be effected by compressed air admitted to the cylinder 11 through a manually-controlled solenoid-actuated valve 19. In a modification (Fig. 3, not shown) a solenoid (34) arranged within the cylinder 11 and energized briefly by " one shot " means (38) may force the hammer downwardly. The hammer is returned to its inoperative position by a spring 14, (39). Type-wheel machines; index-setting.-The dies 17 may be carried on a frusto-conical member 9 or axially on a disc (29), Fig. 2 (not shown), which may be of rubber or of metal, may be resilient and have fixed dies or non-resilient and have dies movable relative to the carrier. The die carrier may have indicia on its outer periphery. A projection (33) may be formed on the frame to co-operate with recesses (31) in the die carrier for alignment for impression.
