Abstract
1296637 Non-refillable closures; caps for bottles JOSEPH E SEAGRAM & SONS Inc 16 Aug 1971 [26 March 1971] 38359/71 Headings B8D and B8T A non-refillable bottle closure comprises a polyethylene tubular cage 3 having a valve seat 16 for a glass or polystyrene ball, a polypropylene cowl 4 having a reduced diameter pouring spout 30, and a valve guard member 31 located in the cowl and having a downwardlyprojecting stem 40 which restricts the longitudinal motion of the ball within the confines of longitudinal ball-guide ribs 25 provided on the wall of the cage. The cowl and cage are interlocked together by engagement of a cage rib 45 in a cowl recess 46. The cage is a friction-fit within the bottle neck and the closure is fastened to the neck by a rolled aluminium looking band 5, which clamps cage and cowl flanges 28, 47 against the neck end and retains co-operating rings of lugs 11 and teeth 12 on the bottle neck and cowl flange in engagement to prevent relative closure / bottle neck rotation. As shown, the guard member 31 is integrally moulded with the cowl and is centrally located therein by radial webs 32. In a modification, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown), the guard member 31a is a separate metal, plastics, or glass disc, which is centrally located in the cowl by cowl webs 32a and disc projections 42. The cowl is provided with a screw threaded polystyrene cap 2 having a plastics-faced pulp liner 1 which is compressed against the pouring spout rim until internal axial ribs 55 on the cap abut the cowl.
