Abstract

1296069 Controlling oxygen steelmaking NIPPON STEEL CORP 29 Dec 1969 [27 Dec 1968] 63007/69 Heading C7D The exhaust gas from the converter is drawn by a fan through a conduit in which is a flow control device acting to bring the flow of gas and inducted air into conformity with a predetermined relationship with time based on previous experience with heats blown under similar conditions. In this way the carbon content of the steel in the final stages of blowing can be determined from measurements on the exhaust gas. Preferably the gas flow is given by α(t). Fo 2 . K., where Fo 2 is the oxygen flow and α(t), K are previously determined coefficients, which may vary during the course of the blow. 'The carbon content of the bath is obtained by determining decarburization velocity from the composition and flow volume of the exhaust gases. As particularly described, oxygen flow meter 16 sends a signal to multiplier 10 wherein are stored the coefficient values, and the subsequent output passes to controller 9, which also receives a signal from exhaust gas flow meter 13 corrected for temperature and pressure at 13<SP>1</SP>; on the basis of this information damper 4 is operated by cylinder 7 under control of regulator 8. Flow volume and gas analysis are integrated at 19 to give decarburization rate.
