Abstract

In the blast refining of pig iron in a converter 1, the gases discharged from the converter are collected in a hood 3 and drawn off by a fan 6 controlled by a throttle valve 7 adjusted by, servomotor 8 in accordance with the difference between the ambient air-pressure and the gas-pressure in the hood 3, modified continuously by the measured concentration of a selected gas in the discharge. The gas-pressures are measured by sensors 11, 11a, 11b, converted to pressure differences at 12, to electrical signals at 13 and fed to a regulator 9 controlling motor 8. The collected gas discharge is analyzed at 18, and the concentration of a particular constituent, e.g. CO, is computed at 19 and compared with the theoretical concentration to produce a correction signal for regulator 9. The selected constituent may alternatively be O 2 , N 2 or CO 2 .
