Abstract

1295440 Coated particles STAMICARBON NV 17 Dec 1969 [19 Dec 1968] 61526/69 Heading C1A [Also in Division H1] Carrier particles bearing fine ferromagnetic particles or their surfaces are made by suspending the carrier particles in a solution of at least one compound of at least one metal capable of conversion to ferromagnetic material, gradually introducing an alkaline solution into the agitated suspension through a tube below the surface of the suspension, to generate hydroxyl ions and form a precipitate substantially entirely on the surfaces of the carrier particles, and then separating the loaded particles from the suspension. The rate of addition of alkaline solution is such that during the precipitation the average pH of the suspension does not increase by more than 0À1 per minute, and deviations from the average increase do not exceed 0À05 pH. If an iron compound is present in the solution, the iron ions must be divalent. The alkaline solution may be a carbonate, bicarbonate or ammonia. The separated loaded carrier particles may be dried, calcined and optionally, reduced. In Examples (1) silica particles are coated with iron oxide by adding oxygen-free Na 2 CO 3 solution to an oxygen-free suspension of silica in FeCl 2 solution; (2) silica particles are coated with Co-Ni alloy by adding ammonia and ammonium bicarbonate to a suspension of silica in a solution of nitrates, and reducing in H 2 compressed pellets of the dried product.
