Abstract

1291064 Oxide-coated particles STAMICARBON NY 19 Nov 1969 [21 Nov 1968] 56715/69 Heading C1A [Also in Division H1] Permanently magnetizable MO.Fe 2 O 3 (M is Fe<SP>++</SP> or another bivalent metal ion) is precipitated on to carrier particles suspended in a solution containing Fe<SP>++</SP> with or without another bivalent metal ion by converting Fe<SP>++</SP> to Fe<SP>++</SP><SP>+</SP> at pH 2-6À5 at such a gradual rate in the agitated solution that precipitation is not effected in the body of the solution. The particles are then separated from the liquid, washed and dried by heating. The particles may then be calcined, optionally followed by complete or partial reduction. Oxidation may be effected by NO 3 derived from a solution of NH 4 NO 3 or by halogen oxy-acids. The required pH may be maintained by injection of an alkaline solution, e.g. Na 2 CO 3 , NaHCO 3 or NH 4 OH, Alternatively, oxidation may be carried out by injecting a rapid oxidant, e.g. KM 2 O 4 or NaNO 2 into the carrier suspension. In this embodiment, the rate of injection is such that the increase in the amount of Fe<SP>++</SP><SP>+</SP> in the suspension is not more than 0À05 mole per litre and per minute, and the deviations around the mean change do not exceed 0À001 mole per litre of solution. Examples describe the co-precipitation, on to SiO 2 particles, of mixed Ni-Fe oxides, mixed Co-Fe oxides and a Co-Fe oxide containing Mn (derived from KMnO 4 oxidant). The oxides are described as ferrites. In one example, the product (SiO 2 coated with Co-Fe oxides) is mixed with polyurethane in DMF and coated on to a polyester film.
