Abstract
Finely divided chrome ore, a reductant (pref. coke) and a binder of Na and/or Ca lignosulphite (e.g. paper pulping waste liquor) is pressed into pellets and prereduced at 100-300 degrees C. Final redn. is at 1150-1200 degrees C to form Cr powder used in alloy prodn. More rapid and efficient final redn. is achieved.
