Abstract

1293761 Centrifugal separators THOMAS BROADBENT & SONS Ltd 7 Nov 1969 [16 Nov 1968] 54475/68 Heading BID In order to prevent solid particles, e.g. sugar crystals, discharged from the lip 1 of the rotating basket 2 of a centrifugal separator, from being fractured at the wall of an annular pneumatic zone 30 surrounding the lip, jets of air (or other gas) from toroidal manifold 5 are directed into the zone 30 by vanes 6 in passage 4 so as to reduce the radial component of velocity of the particles. Pressurized air is introduced into manifold 5 from duct 32. If desired, the air may be heated to assist in the drying of the particles separated by basket 2. The casing of the annular pneumatic zone is of volute configuration, the deepest end of the volute leading to a conveyor duct 34 for removing the separated particles from the machine. The apparatus shown is particularly suitable for 'high velocity particles', for the discharged particles are made to move in a direction opposite to the direction of rotation of basket 2. An apparatus which is suitable for 'low velocity particles' is described: this has a shallower annular casing, and the vanes form an obtuse angle with the tangential direction of flight of the particles so as to enhance their velocity in the direction of rotation of the basket. The separation of polystyrene balls is referred to. Curved vanes may be used. An apparatus is described wherein, the air jets are arranged to have a velocity substantially equal and opposite to. that of the particles discharged from the lip of the basket. The velocity of the particles is then reduced so that they fall freely under gravity.
