Abstract

1293111 Photochromism AGFA-GEVAERT AG 19 April 1971 [19 Feb 1970] 23764/71 Heading C4S [Also in Division G2] A photographic material comprises at least one phenyl borate and at least one bis-pyridinium salt. The phenyl borate is preferably of formula wherein R<SP>1</SP> is aryl or substituted aryl and R<SP>2</SP> is nitrile, aryl or substituted aryl and Y is a cation. The pyridinium salt is preferably of formula wherein R is alkyl, aralkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, substituted aryl or acyl and X is an anion. The components may be mixed in a binder and coated in the same layer which may be selfsupporting or coated in separate layers. On imagewise exposure to light, a coloured image is produced in the material which fades in time or immediately on wetting. The image may be stabilized by (i) adding phenols, pyrrolidones or amides to the material, (ii) applying a protective layer over the light-sensitive layer or (iii) removing one of the components either by chemical reaction or dissolution. The material may be sensitized with cyanine, xanthylium or acridinium dyes.
