Abstract

1436375 Photographic colour images; transfer processes EASTMAN KODAK CO 23 July 1973 [24 July 1972] 34927/73 Heading G2C Photographic dye images are obtained by imagewise exposing a photographic silver halide material, developing using as developing agent an o- or psulphonamido-aniline (which may be substituted) or an acid salt thereof in the presence of a colour coupler, and treating with an onium compound during development or subsequently thereto. The developing agent may have one of the general formulae:- where R<SP>1</SP> is alkyl or 1-8C, aryl of 6-20C or a heterocyclic radical having 5 or 6 atoms in the heterocyclic ring R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> are each H, halogen or alkyl or alkoxy of 1-8C and R 4 and R 5 each has one of the values given for R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> or together from a 5- or 6- membered carbocyclic ring. The onium compound may be a quarternary ammonium a sulphonium or a phosphonium compound, e.g. buryl-pyridinium p-toluene sulphonate. The developing agent, colour coupler and onium compound may each be initially present in the photographic material or in the developer or activator solution, or the onium compound may be applied from a post-development processing bath. The dye image formed may be non-diffusible or may be diffusible and may be allowed to diffuse to a colour transfer receiving layer. Alternatively in a colour transfer process, the imagewise reaction product of oxidized developing agent and colour coupler may be formed and allowed to transfer to an image receiving layer containing the onium compound e.g. as a polymeric onium dye mordant. In one embodiment, a colour transfer material may contain a silver halide element containing the sulphonamido-aniline developing agent and a diffusible-dye-releasing non-diffusible colour coupler, a rupturable reversoir containing alkaline processing solution and an image-receiving layer containing the onium compound. In a further transfer embodiment, a diffusible colour coupler which is immobilized on colour development is used to provide a dye image in the receiving layer in the non-exposed areas of the transfer material.
