Abstract

1376234 Photographic dye image-receiving material EASTMAN KODAK CO 12 Jan 1972 [13 Jan 1971] 1462/72 Heading G2C A dye image-receiving material comprises a support bearing a developing agent scavenger layer comprising an isocyanate - bisulphite addition product and a dye image-receiving layer, preferably in the order recited from the support. The material may contain a timing layer between the scavenger layer and the dye image-receiving layer. The material may contain a pH lowering layer and the pH lowering substance may be in the scavenger layer (see Ex 3). The addition product may have the formula:- R-NH-COSO 3 M or may be a polymer or copolymer having recurring units of the formula:- -CH 2 -C<SP>1</SP>(R 1 )- NH-CO-SO 3 M where R is optionally substituted acyclic alkyl, alkenyl, 4-6c adicyclyl or optionally substituted aryl; R 1 is H or optionally substituted acyclic alkyl; and M is an alkali metal or ammonium (see layer 2 in Ex 1 and 2). The invention also comprises imagewise exposing a photo-sensitive element which comprises a support bearing at least one photosensitive silver halide emulsion layer each having associated therewith a non-diffusible coupler capable of reacting with oxidized aromatic primary amino colour developing agent to produce a diffusible dye, treating the layer outermost from the support of the photosensitive element with an alkaline processing composition to effect development of each exposed silver halide emulsion layer with an aromatic primary amino colour developing agent and to form an imagewise distribution of diffusible dye and allowing at least a portion of the diffusible dye to diffuse to a dye imagereceiving layer which may be integral with the photo-sensitive element or on a separate support, in which process the alkaline processing composition liberates an isocyanate from a bisulphite addition product thereof which reacts after said development with any unused aromatic primary amino colour developing agent to form a colourless product thereby eliminating the need for a pigmented masking layer and reducing the yellowishbrown stain resulting from diffusion of unused developing agent into the image-receiving material and atmospheric oxidation thereof. The alkaline processing composition may be in a rupturable container. The photo-sensitive silver halide emulsion layers may be direct-positive.
