Abstract

1292032 Screw-and-nut gearing ROTAX Ltd 14 Jan 1970 [28 Jan 1969] 4606/69 Heading F2Q [Also in Division B8] A jack comprises a hollow housing 18 through which can pass a screw shaft 13 attached non-rotatably to a concrete slot (11), Fig. 7 (not shown), to be lifted. A drive member 17 is located in the housing 18 by bearings 19 and may be rotated by a motor (14), Fig. 2 (not shown), through a roller chain 16, the motor (14) being arranged to operate two jacks by two such chains 16. A ball nut 20 is rotatably. arranged in the housing 18 and threaded on the shaft 13 above the member 17 and a plain nut 23 similarly arranged below the member 17 which has driving dogs 25 diametrically disposed on either end to engage driving dogs 26 on the respective nuts 20, 23. The arcuate-length of the dogs 26 is greater than that of the dogs 25, while the arcuate spacing between the dogs 26 is greater than the arcuate length of the dogs 25. In the rest position the plain nut 23 takes the load and, on rotation of the member 17 to raise the load the upper dogs 25 engage the ball nut dogs 26 to drive the ball nut 20 before the lower dogs 25 engage the plain nut dogs 26. This transfers the load to the ball nut 20, continued rotation of the member 17 raising the load, while the lower dogs 25, 26 engage to rotate the plain nut 23, which is now not under load, to follow-up.
