Abstract

1,044,326. Screw jacks. DUFF-NORTON CO. Nov. 10, 1964, No. 45785/64. Heading B8J. Figs. 1, 3, 5 show a worm gear jack 10 comprising a motor-driven power input shaft 24 formed with a worm 30 to engage a worm-wheel 48 threadedly mounted on threads 46 of an output screw 38 which is also threaded at one end 19 for coupling to a load (not shown). With a 20 : 1 worm-gear ratio and 50 threads per inch on the output screw 38 one full turn of the input shaft 24 results in 0.001 inch travel of the output shaft. The power input shaft 24 is mounted in eccentric bushings 22 so as to be able to adjust its position relative to the worm-wheel 48 to regulate the degree of intermesh therebetween to reduce backlash set-screws 29 being used to lock the bushings 22 once set. Radially arranged passageways 60 formed in the worm-wheel 48 extend to the threads 46 to ensure lubrication by grease introduced through a fitting 58. Rotation of the worm 30 develops a pumping action to force grease through the passageways 60. Fig. 8 shows a second embodiment with a double thread power output screw 72 of Acme form having, a pitch of 0�250 inch. Coupled with a 5 : 1 worm-gear ratio one turn of the input shaft results in 0.050 inch travel of a load plate 78. The thread of screw 72 is protected by a bellows boot 80 and a shell cap 76.
