Abstract

1345136 Anti-backlash screw jacks PHILADELPHIA GEAR CORP 15 Dec 1972 57953/72 Heading B8J [Also in Division F2] An anti-backlash screw jack comprises a load screw 10 driven by a worm gear 20 rotated by a worm 15. Above drive portion 21 the worm gear 20 is provided with an integral sleeve portion 22 radially spaced from the threads of the load screw 10 and housing an anti-backlash nut 30 in mesh with the screw 10. The lower end of the anti-backlash nut 30 is initially spaced above an internal shoulder 24 of the worm gear 20 by a selected distance, forming a wear gap 34. Lower portion 31 of the anti-backlash nut 30 is splined on to the lower portion of the sleeve 22. A take-up nut 40 is externally threaded and in mesh with internal threads on the upper portion of the sleeve 22. The lower end of the take-up nut 40 is adapted to engage a shoulder 33 on the anti-backlash nut 30. Wear on the upper surface W of the threads of the worm gear 20 is taken up by manually screwing-in the take-up nut 40. The upper end surface of the sleeve 22 is provided with radial markings against which an arrow on the upper end surface of the take-up nut 40 gives an indication of the extent of wear of the worm gear 20.
