Abstract

920,649. Screw-and-nut gearing. SPECIALTIES DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. July 12, 1961 [Aug. 31, 1960], No. 25201/61. Class 80 (3). In screw-and-nut gearing of the kind wherein one or more sets of balls are disposed between a screw 10 and a nut 11 so as to lie in complementary grooves 12 therein, a transfer element for recirculating the balls is formed as an insert 15 of generally cylindrical form having a flange 26 adapted to fit in the upper part of a circular stepped bore 16 in the nut so as to fit flush with the surface of the latter, the step 25 in the bore positioning the insert radially therein, and a tongue and groove connection 28, 27 between the flange 26 and the nut to position the insert about the axis of the bore 16, so that a transfer groove 20 is accurately positioned for transfer of the balls in known manner between points less than one convolution apart on the nut grooving. The groove 20 is of S formation (Fig. 3, not shown) to provide for smooth transfer of the balls, a cylindrical surface 19 being formed on either side of the groove 20 which conform with the crests 13 between the grooves of the screw. The tongue 28 may be used to position the insert for machining of the groove 20.
