Abstract

1289662 Ignition systems GENERAL MOTORS CORP 6 May 1971 [18 May 1970] 13404/71 Heading F1B In an internal-combustion engine ignition system alternating current signals are produced 15, 18 in time with the engine and a circuit for energization of the primary winding 35 of an ignition coil 34 from a battery 8 is adapted to be completed and interrupted respectively in response to opposite polarity half cycles of the signals. A bias potential circuit is arranged so as to apply a bias potential to the signals so as to assist the action of those half cycle signals which effect energization of the ignition circuit primary winding and a circuit arrangement responsive to a predetermined value of current in the ignition coil primary winding is adapted to vary the magnitude of the bias potential so as to complete the primary winding energization circuit for a period of time just long enough for the energization current to reach the predetermined value. As shown completion and interruption of the primary winding energization current is effected by a switching transistor 10 controlled by a circuit including further transistors. The system includes a current limiting transistor 50 which operates in response to a predetermined current in the ignition coil primary winding.
