Abstract

1,023,928. Ignition systems. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. July 3, 1962 [July 12, 1961], No. 25197/61. Heading F1B. Spark ignition apparatus of the kind where a continuous advance of timing with engine speed is not required comprises in combination a generator 32 driven by the engine and arranged to produce during each revolution of the engine a predetermined number of output signals each consisting of successive pulses of opposite polarity, a trigger circuit (transistor 7) driven by the output signals and arranged to produce an output pulse on receiving either the positive or the negative pulse of each output signal, a control circuit (transformer 23) driven by the trigger circuit for producing a spark and a reversing switch 33 the position of which determines whether the trigger circuit is driven by the positive or the negative pulse of each output signal of the generator. The reversing switch 33 normally occupies a position in which the trigger circuit is operated by the first pulse in each signal but is movable upon energization of the engine starter motor to its alternative position in which the trigger circuit is operated by the second pulse in each signal. The switch may be manually operated or automatically operated on energization of the starter motor. The terminals 5, 6 are for connection to a battery or other D.C. source. The generator may include a rotor, driven by the engine, having two lobes. The lobes are arranged to produce signals on passing a fixed magnetic pick-up coil. The pulses may be produced photo-electrically. The system may employ either P N P or N P N transistors.
