Abstract

1,132,549. Ignition Systems. MOTOROLA Inc. Sept. 27, 1966 [Oct. 21, 1966], No. 43945/67. Heading F1B. [Also in Divisions H1 and H3] An ignition system of capacitor discharge type comprises a plurality of semi-conductor switch devices 18 individually connecting the discharge capacitor 19 to ignition coil devices 16, individually coupled to spark devices 15, a rotary member rotatable with the engine and having a plurality of shaped pole elements arranged to co-operate with a pick-up device 50 for generating pulses in the pickup device when the pole elements pass the pick-up device, to produce firing pulses and a plurality of circuit portions arranged to individually connect the pick-up device to the semi-conductor switch devices. The circuit portions are responsive to a further pole element on the rotary member for completing the circuit portions to apply the firing pulses in turn to the semi-conductor switch devices so that the switch devices discharge the capacitor through the individual coil devices to provide timed ignition pulses to the spark devices. As shown the circuit portions include a plurality of reed switches 60 responsive to the further pole elements. In a modification the circuit portions include a plurality of semi-conductor devices in place of the reed switches. By using a shaped pole element for generating the triggering pulse the advancing of the timing of the ignition pulses is provided automatically.
