Abstract

1,224,849. 849. Ignition systems; timing ignition. MOTOROLA Inc. Nov.11, 1969 [Nov.21, 1968], No.55113/69. Heading F1B. A capacitor discharge ignition system for an internal combustion engine has a pulse generator (engine flywheel 38 and pick-up units 40-43) driven by the engine and a trigger circuit including an SCR 30 responsive to the pulses from the generator reaching a given level to discharge an ignition capacitor 32 to produce an ignition pulse for the engine, the pulses reaching the given level in a timed relation to the engine RPM. A vacuum controlled voltage generator 115, 120 responsive to the engine vacuum is provided to generate a potential which varies a bias voltage applied to the trigger circuit thereby varying the time required for the pulses to reach the given level to discharge the ignition capacitor, whereby the ignition timing depends on both engine RPM and vacuum. A thermistor 150 provides temperature stabilization for the transistor 132. In a modification the circuit for providing an output potential representing engine vacuum includes a strain sensitive transistor. Other modifications are described.
