Abstract

1292309 Regulating IC engines; ignition systems SOC DES PROCEDES MODERNES D'INJECTION SOPROMI 13 Nov 1969 [20 Dec 1968] 55712/69 Heading F1B [Also in Division G4] A ring counter controls the distribution of signals controlling ignition or fuel injection in an internal combustion engine. The detailed description concerns the latter. The counter, Fig.2, comprises one 4-layer semi-conductor 11, which conducts as soon as the system is switched on, and three single-junction semi-conductors 12-14. Single-junction 35 is cut off while transistors 9, 10, 28, 29 conduct. Potential from point a pulses thyristor 30 to energize the solenoid controlling fuel injector 51, the duration of the injection being dependent on parameters controlling variable resistors 23-26, 34. The injection ceases when the potential across capacitor 27 energizes single -junction 35 so cutting off transistor 28. A positive pulse, such as from the ignition contact-breaker 1, stops the counter in known manner. Fig. 2 does not show a resetting circuit but a long pulse applied to a transistor (70), Fig.3 (not shown) between the anodes of 11, 12 ensures that 11 conducts to the next pulse from 1 to restart the cycle. Fig. 5 shows a similar resetting arrangement with a counter using single-junction stages only. As an alternative to the use of transistor 70 resetting is effected by amplification of a weak pulse from one of the sparking plug leads 149, the resulting pulse being applied to the first stage 11a. In arrangement of Fig. 5 responds to operation of push button 134 to produce a round of injections without rotation of the engine. Fig. 4 shows an arrangement for amplifying and shaping ignition pulses. The injection pulses can be delayed according to the conditions of the engine, e.g. engine speed or load.
