Abstract
1,272,976. Ignition systems. GENERAL MOTORS CORP. Oct.28, 1969 [Nov. 8, 1968], No. 52709/69. Heading F1B. A capacitor discharge ignition system includes a source 10, 10a of ignition signals produced in timed relationship to the rotation of an internal combustion engine, a converter circuit responsive to each ignition signal for producing the potential which provides the charge upon the ignition capacitor 18 and a switch 22 for connecting the ignition capacitor across an ignition coil primary winding 20. A circuit is provided for producing two like-polarity output signal pulses in response to each input ignition signal comprising a direct current potential source 8, input terminals 16, 17 or the like across which the ignition signal source 10, 10a is connected, a transformer 36 having a primary winding 37 and a secondary winding 38 which are respectively connected in opposite polarity relationship across terminals 28, 5 of the output circuit a transistor 80 having a control electrode and two current carrying electrodes, the primary winding of the transformer and the current carrying electrodes of the transistor being connected in series across the direct current potential source 8, a capacitor 69, first and second resistors 67 68, an R-C charging circuit for the capacitor including at least the series combination of the first resistor 67, the capacitor 69 and the control electrode and one of the current carrying electrodes of the transistor 80 connected across the direct current potential source and a controllable switching device 90 responsive to each input signal applied across the input terminals for connecting the capacitor in a reverse polarity relationship across a control electrode and one of two current carrying electrodes of the controllable switching device 90 and for establishing a discharge circuit including the second resistor 68 and the capacitor. In a modification (not shown) the source of ignition signals comprises a magnetic pulse generator.
