Abstract

1383086 Rapid energization of magnets LUCIFER SA 12 April 1972 [23 April 1971] 16796/72 Heading H2H [Also in Division H3] A system for energizing an electromagnetic device comprises means whereby the device is initially energized at a high current value which energization is reduced to a lower current value a predetermined time after the initial energization. An electromagnet is provided with two energizing windings B1, B2 both of which are energized from an A.C. source ab by way of a bridge rectifier 1, the output of which is unsmoothed. Upon closure of a switch S the winding B2 is energized directly by the rectifier 1 whereas the winding B1 is energized by way of a thyristor T2 which becomes conductive immediately the switch S is closed. Thus initially the two windings are energized together to provide the electromagnet with a high value of energization. As the switch S is closed a capacitor C begins charging over a resistor R 1 until it becomes charged sufficiently to cause a Zener diode Z to break down thereby applying a signal to the base of a transistor T1 to cause it to conduct. With the transistor T1 conductive the thyristor T2 turns off at the next excursion to zero of the output of the rectifier 1. Thus the winding B1 is de-energized and the energization of the electromagnet is maintained at a lower value by the winding B2 only. In a second embodiment the electromagnet has one winding only, the high energization being produced by energizing the winding continuously from the output of the rectifier and the low energization by energizing the winding during parts only of the half cycles of the output of the rectifier, the winding being energized by the thyristor as in Fig. 1 the thyristor being gated intermittently by a pulse generator 2 during the low energization mode.
