Abstract

1,196,061. Control systems for inductive loads. DAVIES & METCALFE Ltd. 9 May, 1969 [13 Feb., 1968], No. 7048/68. Heading H2H. [Also in Division H3] A circuit for energizing an inductive load 5 comprises a capacitor 6 in shunt with the load so as to form a circuit having a natural resonant frequency of say, 1000 Hz, a thyristor 8 connected in series with the circuit 5, 6 across a supply P and a pulse generator 9 connected to the gate of the thyristor 8, the output frequency of the generator being variable between 50 and 1000 Hz. Each pulse from the generator 9 turns on the thyristor 8 which is then turned off by the resonant action of the circuit 5, 6, the duration of each conductive period being determined by the resonant frequency of the circuit 5, 6. Thus the average current flowing in the coil 5 is determined by the frequency of the pulses from the generator 9. The diode 10 prevents peak inverse voltages being developed across the thyristor and a capacitor 11 suppresses spurious operation of the thyristor. If desired the voltage across the circuit 5, 6, 8 may be stabilized by a Zener diode.
