Abstract

1,167,320. Control of A.C. motors; inverting. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. 30 Dec., 1966, No. 58355/66. Headings H2F and H2J. [Also in Division H3] The speed of an induction motor is controlled by energizing its stator via two gate turn-off devices GTO1, GTO2 controlled by a generator of square waves whose pulse width is modulated sinusoidally by a frequency-controlled oscillator so that the net stator flux A also varies sinusoidally. As shown, the motor has bifilar stator windings X, Y which are energized alternately but a standard motor may be used, its stator being connected to the secondary of a transformer whose primary has the windings X and Y. The pulse generator comprises a free-running multivibrator circuit (Fig. 3, not shown) and the oscillator is a Wein bridge oscillator (Fig. 2, not shown) whose output is amplified by bi-stable switching circuits (Fig. 4, not shown). The switching devices GTO1, GTO2 are protected by ensuring good coupling between X and Y, so that stored energy is transferred at change over, diodes D5, D6 completing the circuit. If triggering pulses are short R25, D3 and R26, D4 provide "hold-on" current. For polyphase motors a single oscillator would modulate the required number of channels. The supply may be either smooth D.C. or unsmoothed full-wave rectified A.C.
