1289653 Purifying and silencing I C engine exhaust gases TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP 27 Jan 1970 42363/70 Divided out of 1289653 Heading F1B The subject-matter of this Specification is substantially the same as that in the parent Specification but the claims are concerned with a silencer comprising a chamber with an inlet and an outlet at opposite ends and a mass of fibrous material in contact with the inner surface of the chamber. The material is formed from sections with longitudinally aligned holes therethrough aligned with the inlet and outlet. The diameters of the holes are substantially equal to that of the inlet and outlet and the material is twisted to provide a generally helical orientation of the filaments in each section, adjoining sections having different helix angles. The material may be coated with alumina impregnated with one or more oxidation catalysts and lead removing compounds. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1, 058, 706.
