Abstract

PURPOSE:To provide a ceramic honeycomb structure which attains a high cleaning efficiency when used in cleaning the exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine or the like by forming a plurality of through fluid passages spiral with respect to the axis of the structure. CONSTITUTION:This invention provides for example a honeycomb structure of cordierite A having numerous through holes 1 formed spiral with respect to the axis of a structure which is circular in the circumferential section and square in the section. To build this structure, for example, a cordierite power, water and an organic binder are kneaded and molded by extrusion. Here, immediately after or in the course of the molding, one end of the structure is fastened on a rotatable jig 2. The jig 2 is turned about 45-180 deg. on the axis thereof to entirely twist the structure so that the through hole 1 is made spiral. The use of the structure A thus formed always change the direction in the flow of an exhaust gas passing through the through hole 1 thereby increasing interaction between the wall face of the through hole and the exhaust gas resulting from disturbed flow. Therefore, supporting a catalyst on the wall face of the through hole can improve the catalytic action and the effect of trapping fine carbon particle or the like.
