Abstract
1288622 Centrifugal casting LES BRONZES D'INDUSTRIE and P LAJOYE 16 Sept 1969 [17 Sept 1968 11 Oct 1968 25 Aug 1969] 45577/69 Heading B3F Apparatus for centrifugal casting comprises a shell 105 and 201 rotatable about a vertical axis and containing a well having a lower inner portion for receiving molten metal and an upper outer portion 204, the said lower inner portion having a wall 213 generated about the axis of rotating said wall sloping throughout its height outwardly towards the top so as to blend into the bottom of the upper outer portion. The base of the well is provided with a plurality of radially extending vanes 212, Fig. 17, or channels 113, Fig. 7, the latter consisting of grooves cut in the bottom of the shell 105. The said channels may be U-shaped in cross-section, the depth of each channel decreasing progressively towards the periphery of the said lower portion. In operation molten metal is introduced into the said lower portion either by suction or gravity and then transferred without turbulence into the upper outer portion of the well by centrifugal force. The shell may be rotated while the metal is being introduced into the said lower portion, the speed of rotation being variable. The said portion may be heated. When suction is used to fill the well, a valve 225 prevents the metal falling back when the vacuum is released. The apparatus is particularly suitable for casting very oxidizable alloys since any oxides formed during the casting collect near the top of an insulating sleeve 108, Fig. 7, forming a sullage piece. To remove the casting 128 the cover 107 and insulating sleeve are removed, the casting grasped by the sullage piece, and drawn vertically upwards. In an embodiment, Fig. 6 (not shown), the lower inner portion of the well is annular.
