Abstract
Metals which are highly oxidisable in the molten state, partic. Al, Mn, and their alloys are centrifugally cast in a mould centrally filled while in rotation. The mould has vanes or channels radiating around a central cavity which help the metal to flow non-turbulently towards the periphery of the rotating mould. The mould is filled partic. by vacuum bottom pouring degassing the metal as it ascends into the mould. The central cavity is heated to a temp. >= that of the metal when it enters. Rotational speed of the mould may be varied in either direction according to a predetermined program, variations being made progressively to fill up shrink holes formed in the casting during solidification.
