Abstract
965,443. Casting composite articles. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Dec. 23, 1960 [Jan. 6, 1960], No. 44216/60. Heading B3F. [Also in Division H2] Windings are cast in a rotor core for a dynamo electric machine by pouring molten aluminium into a central bore provided in the core so that it flows outwardly into the conductor slots and mould cavities for the end rings &c., venting air from the conductor slots and removing the mould and excess aluminium from the core when solidification is complete. The aluminium may be forced outwardly by centrifugally rotating the mould and core assembly. The laminations 20, 30, 40, Figs. 1a, 1b, 1c and 2, are so perforated that on assembly they provide not only conductor slots 28 but neck portions 26 which serve as heat storage areas for heat generated during operation of the machine. The slats 36 in the laminations 30 provide vents for air displaced during pouring, the air passing into the bore of the core and escaping past the funnel 70. A vent 68 vents the upper end ring cavity. Alternatively the slots 36 may be dispensed with by making the inner bore cf the laminations 30 on the radius R2, and providing vents by welding spacers 78 to the laminations 40. Alternative flux paths may be provided by the use of other appropriate apertured laminations.
