Abstract

1288252 Iron oxide BRITISH STEEL CORP 19 March 1970 [25 March 1969] 15574/69 Heading C1A [Also in Divisions C5 C7 and F4] Iron oxide may be obtained from the spent hydrochloric acid liquor derived from pickling steel. The acid is fed to a tower comprising a hollow cylindrical body and a conical base portion of downwardly reducing cross-section. An annular flame is produced by a number of tangentially arranged coke-oven gas burners in the lower part of the tower, the acid being fed in the form of a spray from the top of the tower, hydrogenchloride and water vapour being driven off and the resulting iron oxide collected. The iron oxide may be used in the process of the invention to produce iron powder (see Division C7).
