1288101 Electron lenses NIPPON ELECTRIC CO Ltd 17 July 1970 [25 July 1969] 34798/70 Heading H1D An electron lens for a triple beam colour television tube comprises third and fifth cup-shaped grid electrodes (304, 307, Fig. 3, not shown) disposed at opposite ends of a cylindrical fourth grid electrode (306), and the diaphragms 41, Fig. 4, closing the ends of the cup-shaped electrodes are provided with elongate apertures 42 extending laterally. These elongate apertures have a diverging effect in the radial direction which compensates for the excessive convergence of the whole lens in the radial direction due to spherical aberration, the magnitude of the diverging effect depending on the length/breadth ratio of the aperture. In Fig. 4 there are three rectangular apertures; in a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the apertures are arcuate and extend circumferentially. In a further modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), for use with coplanar beams there are two arcuate apertures disposed on opposite sides of a central circular aperture.
