Abstract

1284330 Transferring lighters into ships BATTELLE MEMORIAL INSTITUTE 16 June 1970 [17 June 1969] 29232/70 Heading B7A [Also in Division B8] A hoisting installation for use in a lighter transporter by means of which a lighter 1 can be located in a transporter hold 2, 3 or else transported from port to starboard comprises a tower consisting of portals P 1 , P 2 each formed as three uprights m 1 , m 2 , m 3 movable on deck rails 4a, 4b, on which jibs F 1 , F 2 are pivotally mounted at each end, and jib levers f 1 , f 2 are pivotally connected to the jibs F 1 , F 2 to which lighter supporting stirrups A 1 , A 2 are attached, the jibs F 1 , F 2 being angularly displaceable by means of motor winches M 3 , M 4 which are connected by chains c 1 , c 2 and traction bars bt 1 , bt 2 to a plate d 2 pivotally connected to the jib F 2 , a plate d 1 being similarly connected to the jib F 1 . The jib levers f 1 , f 2 are also pivotally connected to the tower by a plate b* pivotally connected to levers l 1 , l 2 which thus maintains the stirrups A 1 , A 2 horizontal during the angular movement of the jibs F 1 , F 2 . In operation of the installation, the jibs F 1 , F 2 are moved to a position as shown in Fig. 3 (not shown), a lighter 1 is picked up at the port side by means of winches M 1 , M 2 attached to the stirrups and the jibs are rotated to the right by the winches M 3 , M 4 which exert a tractive effect on the chains c 1 , c 2 . The lighter can be deposited in the holds 1, 2 or if it is desired to transport the lighter to the starboard side the jibs F 1 , F 2 continue movement to the right, Figs. 4-6 (not shown), and on reaching the position shown in Fig. 6, the drive motors (D 1 ), (D 2 ), Fig. 7 (not shown), of the winches M 3 , M 4 exert a braking effect on the jibs F 1 , F 2 , the change from tractive to braking effect being effected by the electrical control circuit in Fig. 7, depending on the angular position of the winches F 1 , F 2 . For reversal of the operation, i.e. to rotate the winches F 1 , F 2 from starboard to port, the motors (D 1 ), (D 2 ) initially exert a tractive effect on chains c 1 , c 2 while in the last part of the movement (i.e. from Fig. 4 to Fig. 3) the motors produce a braking effect. In an alternative embodiment the chains and traction rods can be replaced by hydraulic or pneumatic jacks whose piston-rods are connected to the plates d 1 , d 2 .
