Abstract

1283860 Spray carburetters ROBERT BOSCH GmbH 27 Nov 1970 [1 Dec 1969] 56431/70 Heading F1B Fuel injection system for an I. C. engine having continuous injection into the manifold and separate ignition comprises a butterfly throttle valve and a measuring element arranged in series in the intake manifold, the measuring element being displaced in proportion to the air-flow through the manifold and actuating the movable part of a fuel valve to meter a quantity of proportional to the air-flow, the measuring element being displaced against a normally constant return force and there being an electromagnet, the field strength of which is variable in dependence upon engine characteristics, and which acts to vary the return force. Combustion air is drawn through a filter 2 and as it enters a divergent part 3 of the induction pipe, acts on a plate 4 mounted on a lever 9. The air passes through a flexible section 5 of the induction pipe in a rigid section 6 containing a butterfly throttle valve 7. The lever 9 is pivoted at 10 and has a lug 11 which actuates a valve spool 12 controlling the flow of fuel pumped through a line 19 to passages 26 and hence to the injection nozzles. The lever acts against the force of a spring 28 having a flat load/deflection characteristic which can be modified by the effect of an electromagnet, the field strength of which is dependent upon engine conditions e. g. load and temperature. The electromagnet comprises a coil 30 and an armature 29 which transmits the force of the spring 28 to the spool 12. To ensure that the force of the magnet does not vary due to its movement, the end of the armature is conical and a soft-iron core 31 has a corresponding conical aperture. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the normally constant return force is produced by the pressure of the fuel acting on the end of the spool. The magnet armature is formed as a sleeve which carries a winding externally and is surrounded by an annular soft-iron core, and a contiguous permanent magnet. A soft iron plate which contacts the face of the magnet remote from the annular core, carries a pin which projects into the bore of the magnet sleeve. A pin projecting axially from one end of the sleeve engages the end of the spool so that the force produced by the magnet augments the spring force.
