Abstract

1485838 Fuel injection systems ROBERT BOSCH GmbH 27 Sept 1974 [28 Sept 1973] 42065/74 Heading F1B A fuel injection system for mixture compressing, spark-ignited I.C. engines with continuous injection into the intake pipe, comprises an air-flow measuring element and a throttle valve in series in the intake pipe, the measuring element being, in use, arranged to be displaced against a restoring force through a distance proportional to the quantity of air flowing through the intake pipe and to adjust a movable part of a fuel metering valve, the fuel pressure within the system being variable so that it can be reduced to produce enrichment of the fuel/ air mixture during the warming-up phase of the engine. Air drawn into intake pipe 1 angularly displaces a flap 2, hinged along one edge on axle 3. A spring 4 resists the movement, which is transmitted by coupling 6 to rotary valve-member 7. Pump 10 supplies fuel from tank 11 to passage 13, annular groove 14 in member 7, passage 15 and chamber 16 where it acts on one side of diaphragm 17. Fuel is able to return to tank 11, via pipe 23, when the pressure in chamber 16 lifts diaphragm 17 off valve seat 22. Fuel from annular groove 14 also enters longitudinal groove 18 which overlaps a groove 19 in the surrounding bore to a greater or lesser extent according to the angular position of flap 2. From groove 19 fuel passes through passage 20 to chamber 21, where it acts on the other face of diaphragm 17, and then to chamber 26 where it unseats diaphragm 17 from valve seat 29 and passes through passage 30 to enter the intake pipe at a point immediately downstream of the throttle valve. Diaphragm 17 is held against seat 29 by ball 33 loaded by spring 31. A bi-metallic strip 35, when cold, acts against spring 31 to reduce its effective force and hence the pressure which must be developed in chamber 26 to unseat the diaphragm. An electrically powered heater 36 is provided which when energized causes strip 35 to bend towards diaphragm 17 so that spring 31 acts with a maximum force on ball 33. In the chamber 21 a spring 40 which biases valve 24 in the closing direction abuts a piston 43 at one end and at the other end bears on a plate 41 which is rigidly attached to ball 42. Fuel which has passed through the metering valve and which leaks past piston 43 passes along a pipe 49 to the inlet manifold to a point downstream of the throttle valve.
