Abstract

1283233 Thermometers VEREINIGTE OSTERREICHISCHE EISEN-UND STAHLWERKE A G 11 Nov 1969 [18 Nov 1968] 55126/69 Heading G1D [Also in Division H1] A hollow refractory body 1 for protection of a thermocouple sheath tube 13 during temperature measurement of a molten metal bath 2 comprises an inner layer 5 of unsintered refractory mass and a dense sintered outer layer 6 of the same material the thickness of the sintered layer being not more than one quarter of the wall thickness of the body 1. The sheath tube 13 containing a thermocouple hot junction 15 is carried by a probe head 11 which is water cooled, and the body 1 surrounds the end of the probe head and most of the length of the sheath tube 13 leaving only the tip 4 protruding the arrangement being such that in use the body 1 affords protection against the slag layer 3 on the bath 2. A specific composition for the material of which the body 1 is made, and a method for its manufacture, are given in the Specification.
