Abstract

1,150,149. Thermocouples. R. A. FALK. 23 Oct., 1967 [25 Oct., 1966; 2 Oct., 1967], No. 48006/67. Heading H1K. [Also in Division C7] A refractory cartridge 11 for sampling molten metal, e.g. a steel melt 13, comprises top and bottom walls 18, 19, and a cylindrical side wall 15 with a sample entry port 16, preferably of diameter #-1 inch, which admits molten metal at bath temperature and retains a quantity of the metal in the cartridge cavity 17 upon withdrawal from the bath. The cartridge 11 is preferably inserted within an insulating, e.g., paper board lance tube 12 for protecting and extending the cartridge into the bath, the tube having an aperture 23 communicating with and wider than the entry port 16. The bottom wall 18 may have an axial passage 190 to form a pin sample for gas analysis; the attached disc sample formed in the cavity 17 is for spectrographic analysis. The entry port 16 may be initially closed by a fusible A1 or steel cap 22 to prevent chilling of the outer edges of the sample. The cartridge may contain inside a steel chill (26, Fig. 6) at the bottom with a refractory annulus (28) spaced above, or a fused quartz tube (34, Fig. 7) mounted between two spaced refractory annuli (36, 38). Alternatively, the cartridge may be provided with a sample shaping insert (49, Fig. 9) of semicircular cross-section. An A1 wire kill (43, 54, Figs. 7, 9) may be provided. The cavity may be divided into a plurality of chambers (62, 64, 66, 68, Fig. 14) each with a sample entry port (70) and provided with different quantities of A1 wire coil kill for determining the optimum kill for deoxidizing the steel. The cartridge may be fitted with a thermo-couple.
