Abstract

1,239,547. Sampling. LAND PYROMETERS Ltd. 31 Jan., 1970, No. 4771/70. Divided out of 1,173,849. Heading B8N. [Also in Division C7] A sampling device, for example, Fig. 1, comprises a metal mould 1 closed at both ends mounted in one end of a holder tube 5 of insulating material, the metal mould having a slot or hole 4 corresponding to a slot or hole 6 in the holder tube. The mould is preferably of tubular steel and the holder of cardboard which may be coated with resin bonded silica or ceramic fibre. A seal 7 which will melt or burn away when placed in molten metal, prevents the intake of slag into the mould when the device is plunged into a molten metal bath. The seal 7 may be of paper, aluminium or mild steel. The dimensions of the mould (Figs. 2 and 3, not shown) may be such as to produce two metal samples of differing dimensions. This may be achieved by the use of a cap on the lower end of the mould having a blind bore therein (Fig. 2) or alternatively means may be provided in the mould (Fig. 3). The device may be fitted with an external thermocouple. The mould may contain deoxidizing material such as aluminium.
