Abstract

1368150 Making thermocouples ELECTRO-NITE SA 10 Dec 1971 [11 Dec 1970] 57434/71 Heading B3A [Also in Division H1] In a device for determining the solidifying temperature of a molten metal sample comprising a lance having a crucible at one end containing a thermocouple, the crucible is made of fire-clay. An assembly comprising a ceramic or quartz support 4 having bores through which are threaded thermocouple wires 5, 6, joined to form a junction 7 and bent over pin parts 8, 9 of a connector 10 is secured at the end of a cardboard lance 1 by means of fireproof cement 3. The end of the lance is dipped in a Zr-based material to form a protective coating 19, and a fire-clay crucible 11 having an opening 12 in its side is fitted on to the end of the lance and secured by fireproof cement 18. The fireclay crucible may be made non- hygroscopic by treating it with a silicone-base solution. The thermocouple wires may be of chromel and "Alumel" (Registered Trade Mark) or alternatively of Pt and Rh in which case they may be arranged as shown or completely enclosed in a U-tube.
