Abstract

1293357 Sampling steel NIPPON KOKAN K K 27 Nov 1969 [30 Nov 1968] 58071/69 Heading C7D A method of rapidly measuring the carbon content of molten steel, which is run into or poured into a sampling vessel, comprises putting a predetermined amount of metallic cooling agent of known composition into the vessel to forcedly cool the steel by mixing with the cooling agent, measuring the solidus line of the resulting mixture by thermal analysis and determining the carbon content of the steel from the said solidus line. Sampling vessel 8 attached to a lance 4 and is inserted in the molten steel in a furnace,vessel 8 has a side aperture 3 allowing the steel to run into sampling chamber 8' containing cooling agents 1 and 2. The temperature of the steel in the furnace is measured by thermocouple 9' and the solidus temperature of the mixture in chamber 8' in measured by thermocouple 9, the thermocouples being connected to recorders by lead wires 11,11'. The metallic cooling agent may be steel, copper or aluminium.
