Abstract
1,130,054. Exothermically-heated pouring nozzle. VESUVIUS CRUCIBLE CO. 20 July, 1966 [22 April, 1966], No. 32676/66. Heading F4B. The nozzle element 10 of a tundish or ladle comprises a circular nozzle shank 13 of refractory material having a bore 19 enclosed by a heater sleeve 17 comprising two identical sections 20, each of which is comprised of a layer of exothermic refractory material (21, Fig. 2, not shown), a layer of insulating material 22 and a semi-cylindrical steel sheath 23, with locking devices (24) which may be compressive buckles. The exothermic material rendered active to emit heat by the heat of molten metal flowing through the bore, preferably comprises a mixture of refractory material (desirably highly porous fire clay), oxidizable metal in a state of subdivision (preferably aluminium, zirconium or magnesium) and an oxidizing agent (such as an alkali metal salt, e.g. nitrate, perchlorate or chromate).
