Abstract
1280236 Endless conveyers SANDCO Ltd 30 July 1969 [1 Aug 1968 13 May 1968] 38314/69 Heading B8A [Also in Division F2] A seal for sealing a gap provided for the flow of a fluid medium between a fixed part and a movable part such as for sealing the gaps 21 through which a conveyer belt 3 may pass into and out of a pressure chamber 2 comprises a seal element 19 which is movably-mounted on the fixed part and yieldably-urged towards the other by pressure means having a resultant which is directly opposed to the resultant of forces exerted on the seal element by fluid flowing under pressure through the gap. As shown, the conveyer belt 3 passes through a pressure chamber 2 supplied with gas from a source 18, the gas pressure tending to lift the seal element 19 being opposed by springs 16 which are off-set so as to balance the forces and maintain the seal element parallel to the belt. In a second embodiment, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), sealing elements (26) are provided one on each side of the belt (22) which in this case consists of two separate belts with the material to be treated between them. The sealing elements are mounted on plungers (27) which are urged towards the belt by the gas pressure until the pressure in the sealing gaps are balanced by the plunger pressures; alternatively the plungers may be operated by a pressure source which is independent of the pressure chamber. In Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown), the sealing elements are resiliently-mounted and urged towards the belt by the gas pressure, the elements being extended axially on the side remote from the pressure chamber so that the forces on each side of the elements balance and maintain the elements parallel to the belt. In Fig. 7, the sealing elements 50 are each mounted by a pair of flexible tubes filled with a pressure medium which exert a force F R . The opposing forces F P produced in the sealing gaps 55 set up torques M and the elements are maintained parallel by means of lever arms 60 supported at their free ends by pneumatic cushion devices; alternatively, each sealing element may be mounted by a pair of flexible tubes one being filled at a pressure higher than the other so as to maintain the element parallel.
