685,627. Stuffing-box substitutes. HAPMAN, H. W. Aug. 23, 1949, No. 21855/49. Class 122(v) [Also in Group XXX] A flight conveyer operating for at least a part of its travel in a conduit is provided with a sealing device interposed in the conduit for engaging the edges of the flights to enable solid material to be conveyed into or out of a chamber containing fluid, said device comprising a resilient tubular member having a bore therethrough for the passage of the conveyer, clamping members securing the opposite ends of said tubular member between end sections of said conduit and a constrictor device comprising a band of flexible material encircling said tubular member and adapted to be contracted by mechanical means to urge the tubular member into sealing engagement with the conveyer flights. As shown, the device comprising a rubber tubing 30 extends across a gap between portions 12 of the conduit of an endless flight conveyer comprising links 23, 24 and flights 27 secured by clamping plates 26 to the links 23, and is secured by connectors 13, 14 to the adjacent ends of the conduit 12. The tubing 30 is secured to the connectors by clamps 34 each comprising a pair of bands 35 with lugs 36 secured together by bolts 37, and is pressed into contact with the peripheral edge of the flights by a sleeve member 40 having overlapping end portions 42, 43 formed with flanges 44 secured together by bolts 48.
