1279562 Tensioners BORBE-WANNER AG 29 May 1970 [4 June 1969] 26084/70 Heading F2G [Also in Division B6] Apparatus for tightening and connecting overlapping portions 17, 18 of a flexible closure band trained around a package comprises a rotatable, toothed segment 15 which is displaceable along the overlapping portions 17, 18 so that its teeth 16 can successively press into a sleeve 19 and/or the portions 17, 18 lying upon a serrated or toothed die 14 to form a non-detachable seal. The segment 15 is mounted on a shaft 10 journalled in roller bearings 11, 12 guided in slots 8, (9, Fig. 1). The roller-bearing 11 is sandwiched between discs 24, 25 and the rollerbearing 12 is sandwiched between a disc 26 and a gear 28 meshing with a rack 29 so that upon rotation of a lever 20 the segment simultaneously rotates and travels along the overlapping portions 17, 18. A pivotable plate 35 engaging over an end of the sleeve 19 prevents major sleeve curling as the segment 15 advances, minor curling being eliminated by the segment 15 pressing down on the plate 35 at the end of its travel. After sealing the segment 15 is returned to its initial position, as shown, whereupon the lever 20 is depressed to firstly raise, via a longitudinally displaceable bolt 60, a bandtensioning roller (49, Fig. 1) and secondly to force the segment 15 downwardly against a pivotable sprung-loaded sleeve stop 40 provided with a knife 38 so that the upper portion 18 is severed. The band may be tensioned prior to sealing by the roller (49, Fig. 1) which is urged downwardly upon a sprung-loaded rocker (45, Fig. 1) and rotated via a pawl and ratchet to slide the portion 18 over the portion 17 held in a roughened die (52, Fig. 1). The band may be metallic or non-metallic.
