[Also in Divisions D1 and H1] An apparatus (Fig. 2) for providing spacedapart double-layer spirals forming ridges in an endless strip 6 comprises a device 7a, 7b to provide both sides of the strip with glue at the parts of the strip to be wound into the spirals, a two-tined fork 8, which when placed with one tine on either side of the strip can be rotated about the axis of its stem 9 to form a double layer spiral, and conveyer belts 19, 20 mounted on a carriage 21 slidable longitudinally of the strip 6 for moving the strip on and for flattening the spiral between rollers 24, 25 together with vertically reciprocatable stamps 22, 23 which at this moment are respectively positioned above and below rollers 24, 25. The fork 8 is rotatable about its axis by means of a shaft 10 provided with a pinion 11 meshing with a rack 12 which is reciprocatable between adjustable abutments 14, 15 by an hydraulic or pneumatic cylinder 13. The spiral in the strip can be formed by coiling in either direction (Figs. 3, 4) depending on the relative positions of the rack 12 and carriage 21 at the beginning of the ceiling. The fork can also be moved along its axis by means of a forked lever 16 which is intermittently angularly reciprocated about a pivot 18 by a cylinder 17. The belts 19, 20 are moved longitudinally of the strip by a cylinder 26 which drives rollers 28, 29 through a crank 27, ratchet and ratchet wheel. The carriage 21 is moved by a cylinder 31 whose piston is connected to a pawl 32 which engages a notch 33 of a rod 34 connected to the carriage, said pawl being released at the end of its stroke by an adjustable abutment 35 which thus defines the sliding range of the carriage 21.
