Abstract

1277481 Abrading GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 1 May 1969 [15 May 1968] 22252/69 Heading B3D [Also in Divisions C3 C4 and C5] A solid dry lubricant for use during grinding, e.g. of ferrous metals, with a cubic crystal boron nitride abrasive tool comprises hexagonal boron nitride or a lubricant having the general lamellar crystal structure of cadmium iodide. The lubricant can be applied in the form of an easily abraded body which is held against the abrasive tool during grinding or can be incorporated in the tool, e.g. a grinding wheel. A suitable body contains 30-60 volume per cent of a bonding resin, e.g. epoxy, polyester, phenolic, acrylic or vinyl, at least 30% of the lubricant and an ingredient, e.g. sulphur, a silane, octadecanol or triethanolamine, to cause the lubricant to adhere during the grinding. Suitable resin-lubricant composites are (a) 32 volume per cent molybdenum disulphide or lead iodide, 22% sulphur, 4% gamma aminopropyltriethoxysilane and 42% epoxy resin and (b) 38À6 hexagonal boron nitride, 5À4% aminopropyltriethoxysilane and 56% epoxy resin; tungsten disulphide can also be used as the lubricant. A grinding wheel is pressed from 10 volume per cent borazon, 15% molybdenum disulphide, 20% of 1-10 micron silicon carbide and 55% phenolformaldehyde resin.
