Abstract

1,145,065. Forming abrasive wheels. CONTINENTAL CAN CO. Inc. 14 April, 1966 [15 April, 1965], No. 16310/66. Heading B3D. A method of forming an abrasive wheel comprises rotating the abrasive wheel 48, positioning a form wheel 36<SP>1</SP> adjacent the abrasive wheel but out of direct engagement therewith, and applying an eroding fluid 60, such as a lapping compound, to thereby form the abrasive wheel in accordance with the form wheel. In prior steps to the actual forming of the abrasive wheel, a grinding wheel of aluminium oxide or silicon carbide is formed to the profile required on the abrasive wheel, such as a diamond wheel, by a pantograph mechanism which moves a tool according to a profile on a template. The shaped grinding wheel is used to produce a profile complementary to the profile required to be formed on the abrasive wheel on the form wheel which may be of cast iron, both the grinding wheel and form wheel being rotated, the form wheel by a belt drive. Thereafter the grinding wheel is replaced by the abrasive wheel 48 to be formed and the form wheel 36<SP>1</SP> is disposed a small distance from the abrasive wheel and the drive thereto disconnected. A lapping compound 60 consisting of silicon carbide grit in a fluid is applied by a brush or pipe to the space between the wheels and transmits rotation of the abrasive wheel to the form wheel, the compound acting on the resin or metal bonding of the abrasive wheel so that the diamonds 52<SP>1</SP> drop from the abrasive wheel without being crushed or rounded. The formed abrasive wheel is then checked by engagement with a piece of chalk, the profile formed on the chalk being examined in an optical comparator. The grit of the abrasive wheel may be between 80 and 320 and first a rough lapping compound having a range between 100 and 220 may be applied and then a finish lapping compound having a range between 220 and 320 may be applied.
