Abstract
1,088,264. Abrasive articles. W. J. ABERNATHY. March 5, 1965 [March 6, 1964], No. 9582/65. Heading B3D. An abrasive article is made by preparing from anodizable stock material a surface conforming to a desired contour, charging the surface with abrasive grit and anodizing the surface to bond the abrasive grit. A blank for a lap is cut or formed of anodizable material such #S aluminium or aluminium alloy. The working surface is lapped to a 4-6 microinch finish. For extreme precision work the blank is stress relieved and the surface again lapped to a 4-6 microinch finish. Abrasive, such as diamond, is pressed, air blasted or rolled into the working surface, which is then anodized. The surface is buffed or polished using an abrasive of smaller grit size than that in the surface. Between the steps of charging the surface with abrasive and anodizing, the surface may be given a thin coating of the same or a compatible anodizable material to fill any cavities around the abrasive.
