Abstract

1478616 Making decorative finishes on metallic articles CONRAH METAL PRODUCTS Ltd 20 Sept 1974 [20 Sept 1973] 44072/73 Heading B3A In a method of providing a decorative finish on an aluminium alloy article, after the surface of the article has been formed or machined approximately to the required profile, the surface is worked with a pointed tool, Fig. 3 (not shown), to provide a number of generally parallel shallow grooves, and then anodized. A closed end aluminium alloy tube (10), Fig. 1 (not shown), is formed by a known process and is rough turned to a uniform external diameter. It is then fine turned with a sharp pointed diamond tipped tool, Fig. 3, to form a fine spiral groove 11, and machined again with either the same or a similar tool to form deeper more widely spaced grooves 12. The tube is anodized externally and, if desired, a pattern of relatively deep grooves may be cut in the surface using glass cutting techniques. The final cutting also burnishes the cut grooves to provide a strong contrast with the remaining anodized surface, which has a satin finish. Anodizing may be performed before fine turning and the article may alternatively have a flat surface. The spiral grooves may be formed with a high speed diamond wheel, which will also burnish the grooves as may the pointed tool used in fine turning.
